WALLACE, Frederick George

No.G/10051, Private, Frederick George WALLACE
Aged 31

1st Battalion, Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment)
Died on Sunday, 10th October 1915

Frederick George Wallace was born in Garboldisham, Norfolk (Guiltcross Q3-1884 4B:260), son of William and Mary Ann WALLACE (née WILLINGHAM).

1891 census...Aged 6, he was in Feltwell with his widower grandfather Robert WILLINGHAM [71] retired shepherd born Feltwell and his aunt Fanny WILLINGHAM [26] born Feltwell. His parents William WALLACE [33] shepherd born Weeting, and Mary Ann [35] born Feltwell; brothers Wilfred [9] born Wilton and Walter William [1] born Garboldisham; sisters Sarah Ann [4] and Helen Dorcas [3 months] both born Garboldisham were at Fincham's Farm, Garboldisham

1901 census...Aged 17, shepherd's page, he was at The Ling, Garboldisham with his parents (mother now recorded as Pollie) with brother Walter and sister Dora.

1911 census...Aged 27, he was at Great Blakenham, Ipswich, a shepherd, boarding with Harry and Emma BONE. His parents were now in Flempton with his brother Walter (shepherd)

He enlisted in Ipswich when resident in Great Blackenham .
The 1st Battalion, Middlesex Regiment according to the war diary, on 10th October 1915 held a church parade and was then to have moved off to fresh billets in BEUVRY, which order was then cancelled. No mention of operations or casualties. They had apparently had no action so far in October. Frederick was the only death in the battalion in Belgium so far in October, the few other deaths were all in France and seem to be at CCS or hospitals. It begs the question as to why, if Frederick had died from illness or accident, his original grave was lost. Transferring him for re-burial to Bedford House rather than nearby Sanctuary Wood cemetery was no doubt due to the latter being full.

Frederick was found here and then taken to Bedford House for re-burial in 1921
